Shani Rhys James - National Museum Cardiff

We are delighted to announce that Shani Rhys James will be included in a major new exhibition of modern and contemporary art at National Museum Cardiff; selected from the paintings, sculptures, films, prints and drawings acquired for the collections of Amgueddfa Cymru (National Museum Wales) and the Derek Williams Trust over the last 10 years.

Who Decides? has been curated by service users from The Wallich (a charity supporting people who have experienced homelessness in Wales) and marks the 25th anniversary of the Derek Williams Trust's partnership with the Museum. Since 1992 The Trust has been central to the development of one of the UK’s outstanding collections of modern and contemporary art. Amgueddfa Cymru (National Museum Wales) also invites the public to vote for their favourite work to be 'released' from the store and placed on public display to encourage a way of collecting that is accessible to all in a space where everyone can enjoy contemporary art.

Shani Rhys James's work will be displayed beside featured artists including Anthony CaroOlga ChernyshevaRichard DeaconLaura FordRichard LongPaula RegoClare Woods and Bedwyr Williams. The exhibition also features an installation of over 70 ceramic works from the private collection of the gallery owner Anita Besson (1933-2015). This outstanding collection, bequeathed to the Derek Williams Trust in 2016, features work by 13 makers including Lucie Rie, Hans Coper, Ryoji Koie and Claudi Casanovas and will be displayed together in the exhibition for the first time.
