Henri Le Sidaner was a master of capturing light and atmosphere. Synthesising the poetic atmospheres of the Symbolists with the Impressionists’ ability to depict light and the Pointillist technique, Le Sidaner created an individual style which focused upon the intimacy of his surroundings. In 1900 he moved from Paris to the medieval village of Gerberoy, finding in his surroundings – as shown in the present painting - a new wealth of inspiration.

‘La Salle jaune, Gerberoy’ marks an interesting shift in composition for the Le Sidaner, who more regularly painted his garden while situated in it. Here, he is positioned inside the house, gazing out onto the garden. The doors create a vista onto the outside, acting as a perfect framing devise to draw the eye along the path, made of short diagonal brushstrokes. Le Sidaner contrasts the warm yellow tones of the inside, to the cool green of the shrubbery, creating a clear delineation between the spaces with the empty chair acting as a bridge between the two worlds. Le Sidaner is celebrated for his skill of suggesting human presence without depicting a single figure, painting moments of tranquillity that could at any moment be disrupted.

‘La Salle jaune, Gerberoy’ was first with Le Sidaner’s Parisian art dealer Georges Petit. His gallery championed many of the greats of Impressionism and Modernism such as Monet, Sisley, Matisse and Picasso. Having already sold ‘La Salle jaune, Gerberoy’ the year it was painted, clearly fond of the painting, Petit included it again in his 1925 exhibition of the artist’s work.
