Regarded as one of the most respected and important artists of her generation, Shani Rhys James (b. 1953) has developed over a long and distinguished career a unique and highly personal style of intense psychological power. Taking almost exclusively the female figure - frequently herself - as her subject, Rhys James has continued to explore the role of women within domestic spaces.
Rhys James has won countless prestigious painting prizes, including the Jerwood Prize in 2003 and was made an MBE for services to art in 2006. She has also been awarded numerous other prizes including National Portrait Award, Mostyn Open, Hunting Prize, the Gold Medal at the National Eisteddfod of Wales. Her work is featured in many major collections including the National Museum of Wales, the Arts Council of England and Columbia University in New York.
