Claude-Emile Schuffenecker played a significant role in the art world of late 19th century Europe. In the 1890s, he was actively involved in the avant-garde art movement, as both a painter and supporter of the emerging Post-Impressionist artists. He became a close associate and friend of several of the most prominent artists, most notably Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin, whose innovative work he helped promote to a broader audience.

Schuffenecker was one of the founders of the Société des Artistes Indépendants and exhibited at its inaugural salon alongside Georges Seurat and Paul Signac. He also exhibited in the eighth and final Impressionist Exhibition of 1886, joining Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Edgar Degas, and Claude Monet. In 1889, Schuffenecker and Gauguin organised the Exposition de Peintures du Groupe Impressionniste et Synthétiste at the Café Volpini to mark the occasion of the Paris Universal Exhibition.

In the late 1880s and early 1890s, Schuffenecker lived in the town of Le Havre, on the Normandy coast of France, where Eugène Boudin and Camille Pissarro had also spent time. The region was an important centre for artists seeking inspiration from its coastal landscapes, vibrant harbour and picturesque countryside.

Normandy's natural beauty and unique light played a significant role in influencing Schuffenecker's artistic vision and inspiring him to create coastal scenes such as Vue de la côte normande. He captured the shifting colours, textures, and atmospheric conditions of the landscape, showcasing his fascination with the interplay of light and nature.

Similarly to his fellow artists Van Gogh and Gauguin, Schuffenecker had a keen interest in Japanese art, particularly prints. In the present work, the influence of Japonisme can be seen in the bold palette and striking composition.

Schuffenecker’s contribution to modern art gained recognition after his passing in 1934, and continues to be celebrated in collections internationally, including the Musée d’Orsay, Paris; the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Pont-Aven; the Wallraf–Richartz Museum, Cologne; and the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
