Hailing from Valenciennes in the north of France, Jules Déjardin was a celebrated landscape painter who exhibited regularly at the Salon in Paris during the second half of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Key examples of his work can now be found in the public collection of the Musée des Beaux-Arts d’Arras.
This intimate pencil drawing is a portrait of Déjardin’s close friend, the French intimist painter Henri Le Sidaner, with whom Déjardin often stayed in the charming village of Gerberoy in Beauvais. Déjardin gifted a portrait to Le Sidaner in 1899: Le Sidaner immediately reworked the drawing transforming it into a true self-portrait. Just a year before this delicate work was made, Déjardin exhibited a portrait of Le Sidaner at the Salon.
Le Sidaner was so fond of the present drawing that he kept it in his personal collection and passed it down to his son and heirs after his death. The work was included in his exhibition at Musée Galliera (1948) and the artist’s great grandson and author of his catalogue raisonné, Yann Farinaux-Le Sidaner, chose to include the drawing in Le Sidaner’s retrospective at Musée du Touquet-Paris-Plage (2014) and illustrated it in the monograph ‘Henri Le Sidaner Paysages intimes’.
