'Etudes' is an early double sided drawing created by Pissarro when he was twenty two and living in St Thomas. On one side, Pissarro has used pencil and ink to experiment with different studies of a woman in a variety of poses. On the other, there are two different landscapes. While the first side shows Pissarro’s keen observations and wanting to capture a moment, the two views of the island reveal his early interest in depicting the figure within the landscape.
