Jean Hélion

30 November - 22 December 2006
Overview

Connaught Brown is pleased to announce their exhibition of paintings and works on paper by Jean Hélion. Hélion flirted with movements such as Surrealism, post-war realism and Pop, but these associations only ever resulted from a drive to produce the works he felt compelled to make, in a style that came naturally, often existing outside of the mainstream canon.  Despite his stylistic diversity, Hélion's artistic development was logical, whilst he maintained astonishing mental integrity. In this important exhibition of Hélion's work, the hats, newspapers, umbrellas and trombones of his pictorial imagery parade their semantic potential.
