Shani Rhys James – ‘Distillation’, National Library of Wales

Hosted by the National Library of Wales’ magnificent Gregynog Gallery, this show celebrates Shani Rhys James’ identity as one of Wales’ most distinguished artists, who in 2006 received an M.B.E. for services to Welsh Art. Opening on 14th February, it will run until 23rd May, 2015.

This extensive exhibition will survey the last 30 years of Rhys James’ work. It will show the gradual development from her earliest paintings of the family in the kitchen to her painterly canvases of solitary figures based in the studio. It will also include her most recent large-scale interiors with wallpaper-patterned grounds. Throughout all her work, the constant is the profound and unnerving psychological dramas at play.

Works on show will include those which won the Eisteddfod Gold Medal award and Jerwood Painting Prize, on loan from major museums and institutions, including the Arts Council England, Birmingham Museum, Jerwood Foundation and National Museum Wales.
