Shani Rhys James - Glynn Vivian Art Gallery | Swansea
To mark the 100th anniversary of the Representation of the People Act, which gave the vote for the first time to women and paved the way for the women's suffrage movement worldwide, the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery in Swansea hosts an exhibition of women's portraits from its permanent collection.
From Shani Rhys James at the dawning of the new millenium to Gwen John working in the early 20th century, history shows women artists have always engaged in the search for expression through painting. The Glynn Vivian display, though modest in scale, is a slice of 20th century life and social history, which emphasises the emancipation of both women artists and women as they are portrayed in portraits.
