Connaught Brown and Alon Zakaim Fine Art are delighted to present Eric Tucker: Characters and Places
Following three outstanding exhibitions, this new show presents a selection of never-before-seen works from Eric Tucker’s estate – including preparatory works and their finished counterparts, which offer a rare glimpse into the artist’s creative process and the people and places which quietly shaped his world. -

Eric’s family knew he painted, but did not realise the extent of his artistry until near the end of his life, in 2018, when he revealed his desire to have an exhibition. It was then that they discovered a treasure trove of remarkable paintings and drawings hidden throughout his modest end-terrace house — in spare rooms, cupboards, even in compostable bags in an old air raid shelter. What emerged was the life’s work of a gifted, self-taught artist, who had quietly chronicled the people and places he was a part of for over sixty years.

“His circumstances didn’t exactly bring art to him – in fact he grew up in surroundings almost bereft of it – but it reached him anyway through his hunger to seek it out.” - Joe Tucker, The Secret Painter, p. 199
Eric's nephew Joe recalls how he kept scraps of paper and pencils in his jacket pocket. At the pub, he would discreetly sketch below the tabletop. During family holidays, Eric would slip away for hours at a time. Many of these quiet absences were spent secretly producing drawings of his surroundings – such as Preparatory drawing for 'Bar Scene with Photo on Wall' (above).
Only after Eric’s death, when his family began matching drawings to paintings, did they realise that he would stow away these drawings in his back pockets and take them back to his painting room to be assembled into complete compositions: “This was his process. The secret painter” (Joe Tucker, The Secret Painter, p. 65).
