Moore and Chadwick: A Radical Form
Connaught Brown are pleased to present Moore and Chadwick: A Radical Form, a fascinating opportunity to compare two titans of twentieth century Modern British sculpture.
The whole of nature is an endless demonstration of shape and form- Henry Moore
As trailblazers and innovators, Moore and Chadwick were at the heart of 20th century sculpture and represented a regeneration in British art, placing the visual arts firmly back in the international spotlight. This exhibition is an exploration of unique form and recognisable visual language throughout both artist’s careers.
The starting point for this exhibition is a lead reclining figureby Moore from 1938, demonstrating Moore’s early interest in Surrealism and the centrality of the reclining figure in his work. We focus on the effects of war on both artists, Moore worked as an official war artist. In the exhibition we have a major drawing, Reclining figures, 1943, which relates closely to the iconic Shelter drawings of 1940 and 1941. Chadwick makes reference to his time as a pilot during World War II through Winged Figures Version II, a work filled tension, rawness and anxiety. In the Post-War years Moore had a renewed desire to return to elements of classicism in style and simplicity, grace and naturalism. With refreshed interest the family group became a focus, Seated Women and a Child, 1945 featured in this exhibition, evokes connotations of harmony, community and new life. There is a focus on later works by both artists which explore how form has evolved through their respective oeuvre and their distinctive approach to form. This exhibition will showcase both artist’s radical approach to form and contribution to Modern British art.
